Tour Overview

The 8 Days Kilimanjaro Marangu Route with 6 Days Hiking is one of the most classic, comfortable and historically popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. Designed with an important acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, this carefully planned itinerary gives you six days on the mountain while combining spectacular scenery, changing ecological zones, mountain hut accommodation and the unforgettable challenge of reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres above sea level. Organized by Tansania Toll Safaris, an experienced tour company based in Arusha, Tanzania, this Kilimanjaro climbing adventure is ideal for travellers searching for a structured and scenic route with established mountain huts rather than tented camping.

The Marangu Route is unique among the main Kilimanjaro climbing routes because trekkers sleep in permanent huts along the trail, making it especially attractive to climbers who prefer additional shelter during their mountain expedition. The route is sometimes known as the Coca Cola Route, a historic nickname associated with its long standing popularity and developed trail infrastructure. Although it is often regarded as one of the more straightforward routes on Kilimanjaro, climbing Africa’s highest mountain should never be considered easy because altitude, cold temperatures, steep terrain and a demanding summit night make the journey physically and mentally challenging.

For this reason, our 6 day Marangu Route hiking itinerary includes a dedicated acclimatization day at Horombo Hut. This additional day allows you to walk toward Mawenzi before returning to sleep at Horombo, helping your body experience a higher elevation before continuing toward Kibo Hut. This creates a more gradual climbing schedule and provides valuable time for your body to adjust to the reduced oxygen levels experienced at higher elevations.

Mount Kilimanjaro rises to 5,895 metres above sea level, making it the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free standing mountain in the world. Located in northeastern Tanzania, Kilimanjaro dominates the surrounding plains and can often be seen from great distances when weather conditions are clear. The mountain consists of three volcanic cones known as Shira, Mawenzi and Kibo. Shira is the oldest and most heavily eroded volcanic centre, Mawenzi is characterized by dramatic jagged peaks, while Kibo is the highest cone and contains the legendary summit of Uhuru Peak.

Your Marangu Route adventure begins on the southeastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro at Marangu Gate, situated at approximately 1,860 metres above sea level. From here, you enter the beautiful montane rainforest, where dense vegetation, towering trees, mosses, ferns and rich birdlife create a lush introduction to the mountain. The first mountain destination is Mandara Hut at approximately 2,700 metres, where you spend your first night on Kilimanjaro.

From Mandara, the landscape gradually changes as you leave the rainforest and enter the heath and moorland zone. Giant heathers, open ridges and expansive mountain views begin to dominate the landscape as you continue toward Horombo Hut at approximately 3,720 metres. On clear days, both Kibo and Mawenzi become visible, revealing the immense volcanic scale of Mount Kilimanjaro and providing some of the most impressive scenery along the Marangu Route.

Horombo Hut becomes one of the most important locations of your entire expedition because you spend two nights here. During your extra acclimatization day, you hike toward Mawenzi or another suitable higher altitude location chosen by your professional mountain guide before returning to sleep at Horombo. This follows the important high altitude principle of climb high and sleep low, allowing your body to experience a higher elevation during the day while recovering at a lower altitude overnight.

The route then continues across the dramatic alpine desert toward Kibo Hut at approximately 4,703 metres, located beneath Kilimanjaro’s enormous summit cone. Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you enter a cold and exposed volcanic environment dominated by rock, gravel and high altitude terrain. Walking between Mawenzi and Kibo across the broad Saddle creates a powerful sense of wilderness, with enormous mountain landscapes stretching in almost every direction.

From Kibo Hut, the greatest challenge of your expedition begins. Your summit attempt normally starts around midnight, with your headlamp illuminating the trail as you slowly climb through steep volcanic scree toward Gilman’s Point at approximately 5,685 metres on the crater rim. The climb requires patience, determination and a deliberately slow pace as temperatures drop and oxygen levels decrease.

For many climbers, reaching Gilman’s Point is already an extraordinary achievement. However, those with sufficient energy and appropriate physical condition continue around the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest point anywhere on the African continent. When weather conditions allow, the early morning light reveals glaciers, volcanic landscapes, distant mountain ridges and clouds stretching far below you.

Standing at Uhuru Peak is a moment created by every step you have taken through the rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and freezing darkness of summit night. After celebrating at the summit, you begin the long descent toward Kibo Hut and eventually continue down to Horombo Hut, where you spend your final night on Mount Kilimanjaro.

The following morning, you continue descending through the heath, moorland and rainforest zones until reaching Marangu Gate, completing your six days of hiking. You then return to Arusha, where a warm shower, comfortable hotel and time to celebrate await.

This 8 Days Kilimanjaro Marangu Route itinerary is an excellent choice for travellers looking for a well established Kilimanjaro climbing route, hut accommodation, an additional acclimatization day and an opportunity to experience one of Tanzania’s greatest adventures with an experienced local mountain team.

At Tansania Toll Safaris, we understand that reaching the summit is not only about physical strength. Successful mountain climbing also requires patience, good preparation, responsible pacing, proper hydration, experienced guiding and respect for altitude. Our mountain team supports you throughout the journey, from your arrival in Arusha to your final steps through Marangu Gate.

This journey takes you from tropical rainforest to alpine wilderness, from sheltered mountain huts to the thin air of the crater rim, and finally to one of the most celebrated viewpoints in Africa. It is your opportunity to stand at 5,895 metres on the Roof of Africa.

Day To day

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN ARUSHA AND KILIMANJARO CLIMBING BRIEFING

Welcome to Tanzania and the beginning of your 8 Days Kilimanjaro Marangu Route adventure. Depending on your international or domestic travel arrangements, you will normally arrive through Kilimanjaro International Airport, located between Arusha and Moshi. From the airport, you will be welcomed by a representative from Tansania Toll Safaris and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. The road journey from Kilimanjaro International Airport to central Arusha is approximately 45 to 55 kilometres and generally takes around one to one and a half hours, depending on traffic and the location of your accommodation.

Arusha lies at approximately 1,400 metres above sea level and serves as one of Tanzania’s most important tourism centres. It is a major departure point for Kilimanjaro expeditions and wildlife safaris to destinations such as Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara National Park. Once you arrive at your hotel, you will have time to rest before meeting your professional Kilimanjaro mountain guide for a detailed pre climb briefing.

Your guide will explain the complete Marangu Route itinerary, expected hiking distances, daily routines, hut accommodation, altitude changes, summit strategy, mountain weather, hydration, meals, personal health monitoring and important safety procedures. Your trekking equipment will also be reviewed to ensure you have appropriate hiking boots, thermal layers, waterproof clothing, warm gloves, head protection, trekking poles, a headlamp, suitable high altitude clothing and a warm sleeping bag.

The remainder of your day should focus on rest, hydration and preparing your luggage for the mountain.

Major activities today include:

  • Airport arrival assistance
  • Transfer to Arusha
  • Hotel check in
  • Meeting with your Kilimanjaro guide
  • Detailed Marangu Route briefing
  • Trekking equipment inspection
  • Packing and final expedition preparation
  • Rest and hydration

DAY 2: ARUSHA TO MARANGU GATE AND HIKE TO MANDARA HUT

Starting elevation: Approximately 1,860 metres

Ending elevation: Approximately 2,700 metres

Approximate hiking distance: 8 kilometres

Approximate hiking time: 4 to 5 hours

Habitat: Montane rainforest

After breakfast at your hotel in Arusha, your Kilimanjaro adventure officially begins as you travel toward Marangu Gate, located on the southeastern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The journey typically covers approximately 100 kilometres, depending on your starting location in Arusha, and usually takes around 2 to 3 hours. As you travel eastward, the scenery gradually changes from the urban surroundings of Arusha toward fertile agricultural landscapes, small towns and communities living around the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro.

Upon arrival at Marangu Gate at approximately 1,860 metres, your guide completes the necessary national park registration procedures while the support team organizes expedition supplies. After registration, you begin hiking into the lush montane rainforest, where towering trees, moss covered branches, ferns, wildflowers and rich birdlife create a beautiful natural environment.

The forest trail climbs gradually and steadily toward Mandara Hut. Weather conditions can sometimes make the path wet, muddy or slippery, which makes comfortable waterproof hiking boots and trekking poles particularly useful. Depending on wildlife movements and luck, there may also be opportunities to observe monkeys and different forest bird species.

After approximately 4 to 5 hours of hiking, you reach Mandara Hut at approximately 2,700 metres above sea level. Mandara provides your first experience of sleeping in permanent mountain huts on Kilimanjaro. After reaching the hut, you can relax, hydrate and enjoy a warm meal prepared by the mountain team.

Major activities today include:

  • Transfer from Arusha to Marangu Gate
  • Kilimanjaro National Park registration
  • Rainforest trekking
  • Birdwatching opportunities
  • Mountain vegetation observation
  • Hiking to Mandara Hut
  • First night in a Kilimanjaro mountain hut

Additional experiences may include:

  • Forest photography
  • Short acclimatization walk
  • Nature interpretation with your guide
  • Bird identification
  • Scenic photography around Mandara
  • Evening briefing about the following day’s climb

DAY 3: MANDARA HUT TO HOROMBO HUT

Starting elevation: Approximately 2,700 metres

Ending elevation: Approximately 3,720 metres

Approximate hiking distance: 11 to 12 kilometres

Approximate hiking time: 6 to 8 hours

Habitat: Heath and moorland

After breakfast at Mandara Hut, you continue upward and gradually leave the dense rainforest behind. The trail transitions into Kilimanjaro’s heath and moorland zone, creating one of the most noticeable ecological changes of the entire Marangu Route. Trees become shorter and less dense while giant heathers, grasses and distinctive high altitude vegetation begin dominating the landscape.

As the forest opens, views of the surrounding mountains become increasingly impressive. On clear days, you may see the dramatic summit cone of Kibo rising ahead while Mawenzi appears with its rugged and sharply eroded peaks. The contrast between Kibo and Mawenzi creates some of the most beautiful mountain views along the route.

Today’s hike involves gaining approximately 1,000 metres of elevation, making it an important acclimatization stage. Your guides will encourage a slow and steady walking rhythm known locally as pole pole, meaning slowly in Swahili. Moving slowly helps conserve energy and gives your body additional time to adapt to increasing altitude.

After approximately 6 to 8 hours of hiking, you reach Horombo Hut at around 3,720 metres above sea level. Horombo is one of the larger overnight locations on the Marangu Route and provides impressive views when the weather is clear. Because you will spend two nights here, Horombo becomes a crucial acclimatization base before continuing toward Kibo.

Major activities today include:

  • Moorland trekking
  • Significant altitude gain
  • Views toward Mawenzi and Kibo
  • High altitude acclimatization
  • Scenic landscape photography
  • Overnight at Horombo Hut

Additional experiences may include:

  • Short evening acclimatization walk
  • Sunset viewing
  • Mount Mawenzi photography
  • Kibo summit photography
  • Stargazing on clear nights
  • Mountain ecology interpretation

DAY 4: HOROMBO HUT ACCLIMATIZATION DAY TOWARD MAWENZI

Starting elevation: Approximately 3,720 metres

Sleeping elevation: Approximately 3,720 metres

Highest altitude reached: Normally approximately 4,000 to 4,400 metres, depending on the route selected by your guide

Approximate hiking time: 3 to 5 hours

Habitat: Moorland and alpine transition zone

Day four is one of the most important days of your 6 day Marangu Route Kilimanjaro climb because it is dedicated to altitude acclimatization. Instead of immediately continuing toward Kibo Hut, you spend another night at Horombo. After breakfast, your guide assesses the group before beginning a controlled acclimatization hike toward higher ground in the direction of Mawenzi.

Depending on trail conditions, weather, group fitness and your guide’s assessment, the walk may take you toward the Mawenzi area or another suitable high altitude viewpoint. The primary purpose is not to cover a great distance but rather to expose your body to a higher elevation before returning to sleep at Horombo Hut. This follows the important principle of climb high and sleep low.

During the walk, vegetation gradually becomes increasingly sparse as you approach the alpine transition zone. Open high altitude landscapes reveal impressive views toward Kibo and Mawenzi whenever cloud conditions permit. Your guide will also monitor how your body is responding to altitude and encourage you to communicate openly about any symptoms you may experience.

After reaching the planned high point, you return gradually to Horombo Hut. The remainder of the day is spent resting, hydrating, eating and preparing for the next stage toward Kibo Hut. This additional night at approximately 3,720 metres gives your body valuable extra time to adapt before travelling deeper into Kilimanjaro’s high altitude environment.

Major activities today include:

  • High altitude acclimatization walk
  • Hiking toward the Mawenzi area
  • Climb high and sleep low acclimatization
  • Health monitoring
  • Mountain landscape observation
  • Recovery at Horombo Hut

Additional activities may include:

  • Mawenzi photography
  • Kibo photography
  • Geological interpretation
  • Stretching and recovery
  • Equipment inspection
  • Summit preparation discussion
  • Rest and hydration

DAY 5: HOROMBO HUT TO KIBO HUT

Starting elevation: Approximately 3,720 metres

Ending elevation: Approximately 4,703 metres

Approximate hiking distance: 9 to 10 kilometres

Approximate hiking time: 5 to 7 hours

Habitat: Alpine desert

After breakfast at Horombo Hut, you begin one of the most visually dramatic sections of the Marangu Route Kilimanjaro climb. The landscape gradually becomes increasingly barren as you leave the moorland environment and enter the alpine desert zone. Vegetation becomes sparse while rock, gravel and open volcanic terrain dominate the scenery.

Your route travels toward the broad landscape between Mawenzi and Kibo, commonly known as the Saddle. The Saddle is a vast high altitude landscape connecting Kilimanjaro’s two major volcanic cones. Walking across this exposed environment creates an extraordinary feeling of remoteness, with Mawenzi rising dramatically on one side and the enormous summit cone of Kibo dominating the route ahead.

Although today’s trail may appear gradual in some sections, the altitude makes hiking significantly more demanding. At elevations above 4,000 metres, your guides maintain a slow and controlled pace to conserve energy and support acclimatization.

After approximately 5 to 7 hours of hiking, you reach Kibo Hut at around 4,703 metres above sea level, your final overnight base before the summit attempt. Once you arrive, your priority is to rest, eat and hydrate while your guide conducts the final summit briefing.

You will organize your warm clothing, headlamp, gloves, snacks, water and other essential equipment. Most climbers attempt to sleep during the early evening because the summit climb normally begins around midnight. Tonight is about conserving your strength for the most challenging part of the expedition.

Major activities today include:

  • High altitude trekking
  • Crossing Kilimanjaro’s alpine desert
  • Walking through the Saddle
  • Views of Mawenzi
  • Views of Kibo
  • Arrival at Kibo Hut
  • Final summit briefing
  • Early rest

Additional experiences may include:

  • Alpine desert photography
  • Geological observation
  • Equipment preparation
  • Sunset photography
  • Mawenzi landscape photography
  • Mental preparation for summit night

DAY 6: KIBO HUT TO GILMAN’S POINT, UHURU PEAK AND DESCENT TO HOROMBO HUT

Starting elevation: Approximately 4,703 metres

Gilman’s Point elevation: Approximately 5,685 metres

Uhuru Peak elevation: 5,895 metres

Sleeping elevation: Approximately 3,720 metres

Approximate total hiking distance: 16 to 20 kilometres

Approximate total hiking time: 11 to 15 hours

Habitat: Arctic summit environment, alpine desert and descending moorland

This is the most challenging, demanding and rewarding day of your 8 Days Kilimanjaro Marangu Route adventure. Your summit journey begins around midnight after warm drinks and a light meal. You prepare your summit clothing and leave Kibo Hut beneath the darkness of the night, following your guides through steep volcanic terrain illuminated by headlamps.

Cold temperatures, strong winds, darkness, steep scree and reduced oxygen combine to make the summit climb physically and mentally demanding. Your first major objective is Gilman’s Point at approximately 5,685 metres, located on the crater rim. The route toward Gilman’s Point involves a long series of steep switchbacks through loose volcanic scree, requiring patience and determination.

Hour after hour, you continue climbing while the eastern horizon slowly begins to brighten. Eventually, you reach Gilman’s Point, one of Kilimanjaro’s recognized crater rim summit points. Reaching Gilman’s Point is already an extraordinary achievement, but climbers who remain physically strong and whose guides consider conditions appropriate continue around the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres above sea level.

Uhuru Peak is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest point in Tanzania and the highest point on the African continent. Standing here can become one of the most memorable moments of your life. If conditions are favourable, you may see glaciers, ice formations, volcanic terrain and clouds stretching across the landscape far below.

After taking photographs and celebrating your achievement, you begin descending toward Gilman’s Point and continue through the steep volcanic terrain back toward Kibo Hut. After reaching Kibo, you normally rest briefly, eat and reorganize your equipment before continuing the long descent toward Horombo Hut at approximately 3,720 metres.

After the thin air and extreme cold of the summit, Horombo often feels considerably warmer and more comfortable. Tonight is a time to eat, hydrate, recover and celebrate the extraordinary achievement of reaching the highest mountain summit in Africa.

Major activities today include:

  • Midnight summit departure
  • High altitude night trekking
  • Ascent toward Gilman’s Point
  • Kilimanjaro crater rim trekking
  • Summit of Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres
  • Sunrise viewing when conditions permit
  • Glacier viewing
  • Summit photography
  • Descent to Kibo Hut
  • Continued descent to Horombo Hut

Additional memorable experiences include:

  • Sunrise photography
  • Glacier photography
  • Views toward Mawenzi
  • Crater rim photography
  • Summit celebration
  • Mountain team congratulations

DAY 7: HOROMBO HUT TO MARANGU GATE AND RETURN TO ARUSHA

Starting elevation: Approximately 3,720 metres

Ending elevation: Approximately 1,860 metres

Approximate hiking distance: 19 to 20 kilometres

Approximate hiking time: 5 to 7 hours

Habitat: Moorland and montane rainforest

After breakfast at Horombo Hut, you begin your final trekking day on Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail retraces the lower section of the Marangu Route, descending gradually toward Mandara and eventually Marangu Gate. As you lose altitude, oxygen levels increase, temperatures become warmer and the barren high altitude terrain gradually transitions back into moorland vegetation.

You continue downward toward Mandara Hut before re entering the lush rainforest. After spending several days among rocks, volcanic landscapes and cold high altitude environments, returning to the dense green forest provides a beautiful contrast. Depending on recent rainfall, the rainforest trail may be wet or slippery, so careful footing remains important.

Eventually, you reach Marangu Gate at approximately 1,860 metres above sea level, completing your six days of Kilimanjaro hiking. At the gate, you complete the national park exit procedures and say goodbye to the guides, cooks and porters who supported your expedition from the lower forest to the summit.

After completing the formalities, you meet your transfer vehicle and travel back to Arusha, normally taking approximately 2 to 3 hours, depending on traffic. Upon arrival at your hotel, a warm shower and comfortable bed provide a welcome reward after several demanding days on the mountain.

Major activities today include:

  • Final mountain descent
  • Moorland hiking
  • Rainforest trekking
  • Marangu Gate arrival
  • National park exit procedures
  • Mountain team farewell
  • Transfer to Arusha
  • Hotel relaxation

Additional activities depending on arrival time include:

  • Celebration dinner
  • Massage or spa treatment
  • Arusha restaurant visit
  • Souvenir shopping
  • Relaxation at your hotel

DAY 8: DEPARTURE FROM ARUSHA OR CONTINUE YOUR TANZANIA ADVENTURE
