The 10 Days Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route with 8 Days Hiking is one of the most scenic, rewarding and well paced ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. This itinerary is designed for travellers who want more time on the mountain, better acclimatization opportunities, varied landscapes and a gradual journey toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres above sea level. Organized by Tansania Toll Safaris, based in Arusha, Tanzania, the Lemosho Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the western side before crossing the spectacular Shira Plateau and continuing toward the southern circuit of the mountain.
The Lemosho Route is widely appreciated for its natural beauty, remote beginning and impressive variety of ecological zones. The trail begins in lush montane forest before entering heath and moorland, then crosses the broad Shira Plateau and continues into high altitude alpine desert. As the climb progresses, the environment becomes increasingly dramatic, eventually reaching the cold arctic summit zone near the crater rim and Uhuru Peak.
Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free standing mountain in the world, rising to 5,895 metres above sea level. The mountain consists of three main volcanic formations known as Shira, Mawenzi and Kibo. Shira is the oldest and most eroded volcanic centre, Mawenzi is known for its jagged appearance, while Kibo is the highest cone and contains Uhuru Peak.
The Lemosho Route begins on the western side of Kilimanjaro, where trekkers enter through a dense forest environment that feels peaceful and remote. The lower slopes are rich in vegetation, birdlife and mountain forest scenery, making the beginning of the trek noticeably different from the higher and more barren sections of the mountain.
One of the major highlights of the route is the Shira Plateau, a broad high altitude landscape that provides spectacular views toward Kibo. The plateau is part of the remains of the ancient Shira volcanic cone and gives climbers an unforgettable introduction to the upper mountain environment.
As the route continues, trekkers reach Lava Tower at approximately 4,630 metres. This is one of the most important acclimatization points on the climb because you ascend to a high elevation before descending to sleep at Barranco Camp. This follows the principle of climb high and sleep low, which plays an important role in gradual altitude adaptation.
The journey later reaches the dramatic Barranco Wall, one of the most memorable landmarks on the Lemosho Route. Although the wall appears intimidating from below, the ascent mainly involves careful trekking and scrambling rather than technical climbing. Your professional mountain guides assist you through the safest sections.
After Barranco, the route continues through Karanga toward Barafu Camp at approximately 4,640 metres. Barafu is the final summit base and sits in an exposed alpine environment beneath the enormous summit cone of Kibo.
The summit attempt normally begins around midnight. You climb slowly through darkness and cold temperatures toward Stella Point at approximately 5,756 metres, located on the crater rim. From Stella Point, the final section follows the rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.
Standing at Uhuru Peak is the defining moment of the expedition. When weather conditions allow, you may see glaciers, ice formations, volcanic terrain and clouds stretching far below you. After celebrating at the summit, you descend toward Barafu Camp and later continue to Mweka Camp.
The final hiking day takes you through the lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate, where your Kilimanjaro trek officially comes to an end. From there, you return to Arusha for a well deserved rest.
This 8 day Lemosho Route provides strong acclimatization opportunities because the itinerary gains altitude gradually and includes important altitude variations along the way. It is an excellent choice for climbers looking for beautiful scenery, a slower climbing pace, remote landscapes and a rewarding summit journey.
With Tansania Toll Safaris, your expedition is supported by professional mountain guides, assistant guides, cooks and porters. Our focus is on responsible pacing, safety, acclimatization, mountain hospitality and helping you experience Kilimanjaro with confidence.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN ARUSHA AND KILIMANJARO CLIMBING BRIEFING
Welcome to Tanzania and the beginning of your 10 Days Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route adventure. Depending on your travel schedule, you will arrive through Kilimanjaro International Airport and meet a representative from Tansania Toll Safaris. The road journey from the airport to Arusha normally covers approximately 45 to 55 kilometres and usually takes around one to one and a half hours, depending on traffic and the location of your hotel.
Arusha lies at approximately 1,400 metres above sea level and is one of Tanzania’s main tourism centres. It serves as a major departure point for Mount Kilimanjaro climbs as well as safaris to Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara National Park.
After reaching your hotel, you will meet your professional mountain guide for a full pre climb briefing. Your guide will explain the route, daily trekking schedule, altitude changes, meals, summit plan, mountain weather, hydration, safety procedures and what to expect during each stage of the expedition.
Your equipment will also be checked to ensure you have appropriate hiking boots, waterproof clothing, thermal layers, warm gloves, head protection, trekking poles, a headlamp and suitable sleeping equipment. The remainder of the day is dedicated to relaxation, hydration and final preparation before travelling toward Kilimanjaro the following morning.

Optional activities include:
DAY 2: ARUSHA TO LEMOSHO GATE AND HIKE TO MTI MKUBWA CAMP
Starting elevation: Approximately 2,100 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 2,650 metres
Approximate hiking distance: 6 to 7 kilometres
Approximate hiking time: 3 to 4 hours
Habitat: Montane rainforest
After breakfast in Arusha, you travel toward the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. The drive passes through rural landscapes, agricultural areas and mountain foothills before reaching the Lemosho starting area. The journey from Arusha usually takes approximately 3 to 4 hours, depending on road conditions and the exact park registration point used.
After completing the necessary national park procedures, your trek begins through the beautiful Kilimanjaro rainforest. The lower slopes are rich in vegetation, with tall trees, mosses, ferns and dense undergrowth creating a cool and shaded environment.
The forest also provides opportunities to observe birdlife and, with some luck, monkeys moving through the trees. The trail climbs gradually toward Mti Mkubwa Camp, located at approximately 2,650 metres above sea level.
This first hiking day is relatively gentle and provides a comfortable introduction to the mountain. Once at camp, your crew prepares your tents and evening meal while your guide explains the plan for the following day’s climb.
Major activities today include:
Additional activities may include:
DAY 3: MTI MKUBWA CAMP TO SHIRA ONE CAMP
Starting elevation: Approximately 2,650 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,500 metres
Approximate hiking distance: 7 to 8 kilometres
Approximate hiking time: 5 to 6 hours
Habitat: Heath and moorland
After breakfast, you leave Mti Mkubwa and continue climbing gradually through the upper forest. As elevation increases, the dense trees begin to disappear and the landscape transitions into heath and moorland.
The trail becomes more open, allowing broader views across the surrounding mountain terrain. You gradually approach the western side of the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most impressive geological features.
The plateau represents part of the remains of the ancient Shira volcanic cone. As you move higher, the enormous shape of Kibo begins to dominate the landscape whenever the clouds clear.
Your destination is Shira One Camp at approximately 3,500 metres. Reaching this elevation marks an important stage of the acclimatization process and introduces you to Kilimanjaro’s true high altitude environment.
Major activities today include:
Additional experiences may include:
DAY 4: SHIRA ONE CAMP TO SHIRA TWO CAMP
Starting elevation: Approximately 3,500 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,850 metres
Approximate hiking distance: 7 kilometres
Approximate hiking time: 4 to 5 hours
Habitat: Moorland and high altitude plateau
Today you continue across the extraordinary Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic parts of the Lemosho Route. The landscape is wide and open, with broad views of volcanic terrain and the upper slopes of Kilimanjaro.
Your route gradually gains altitude as you move toward Shira Two Camp at approximately 3,850 metres. Today’s moderate distance allows you to maintain a steady pace and gives your body additional time to adjust to the increasing elevation.
On clear days, Kibo becomes increasingly visible and dominates the eastern skyline. Mount Meru may also be visible in the distance behind you, creating impressive photographic opportunities.
This is an important acclimatization stage before moving toward the much higher terrain around Lava Tower the following day.
Major activities today include:
Additional experiences may include:
DAY 5: SHIRA TWO CAMP TO LAVA TOWER AND DESCEND TO BARRANCO CAMP
Starting elevation: Approximately 3,850 metres
Highest elevation: Approximately 4,630 metres at Lava Tower
Sleeping elevation: Approximately 3,960 metres
Approximate hiking distance: 9 to 10 kilometres
Approximate hiking time: 6 to 8 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert and moorland
Today is one of the most important acclimatization days on the Lemosho Route. You leave Shira Two and climb gradually toward Lava Tower, located at approximately 4,630 metres above sea level.
As you climb higher, vegetation becomes increasingly sparse and the landscape changes into an alpine desert environment dominated by volcanic rock and open mountain terrain. The temperature may also become noticeably colder as you approach Lava Tower.
Reaching Lava Tower provides valuable exposure to higher altitude. After spending time in this area, you begin descending toward Barranco Valley.
This descent follows the important high altitude principle of climb high and sleep low. You eventually reach Barranco Camp at approximately 3,960 metres, where your body can recover at a lower elevation.
Barranco Camp sits beneath the spectacular Barranco Wall and offers some of the most dramatic mountain scenery along the route.
Major activities today include:
Additional experiences may include:
DAY 6: BARRANCO CAMP TO KARANGA CAMP
Starting elevation: Approximately 3,960 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 4,035 metres
Approximate hiking distance: 5 kilometres
Approximate hiking time: 4 to 5 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
After breakfast, you begin one of the most exciting sections of the Lemosho Route, the famous Barranco Wall. The climb involves steep trekking and some scrambling, but it is not normally considered technical rock climbing.
Your guides assist you through the safest sections and maintain a slow, controlled pace. Once you reach the top, you are rewarded with impressive views across Kilimanjaro’s southern slopes.
The trail then continues across ridges and valleys before descending toward Karanga Valley. After crossing the valley, you make another climb toward Karanga Camp at approximately 4,035 metres.
The repeated climbing and descending throughout the day provides another useful acclimatization opportunity. Karanga is also an important staging point before the final climb toward Barafu Camp.
Major activities today include:
Additional experiences may include:
DAY 7: KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP
Starting elevation: Approximately 4,035 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 4,640 metres
Approximate hiking distance: 4 kilometres
Approximate hiking time: 3 to 4 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Today you move toward your final summit base. The trail climbs steadily through barren volcanic terrain, and vegetation becomes extremely limited as you approach the higher slopes of Kibo.
After approximately 3 to 4 hours, you arrive at Barafu Camp at around 4,640 metres above sea level. Barafu sits in an exposed high altitude environment and serves as the final camp before the summit attempt.
Once you arrive, the main priority is rest. Your guide will provide the final summit briefing and explain the strategy for the midnight departure.
You will organize your headlamp, gloves, warm layers, water, snacks and other essential equipment. Dinner is served early so that you can rest before beginning the most demanding stage of the expedition.
Major activities today include:
Additional experiences may include:
DAY 8: BARAFU CAMP TO UHURU PEAK AND DESCEND TO MWEKA CAMP
Starting elevation: Approximately 4,640 metres
Stella Point elevation: Approximately 5,756 metres
Uhuru Peak elevation: 5,895 metres
Sleeping elevation: Approximately 3,080 metres
Approximate hiking distance: 16 to 17 kilometres
Approximate hiking time: 11 to 15 hours
Habitat: Arctic summit environment, alpine desert and descending moorland
This is the most demanding and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro expedition. The summit attempt begins around midnight, when you leave Barafu Camp beneath the darkness and begin climbing slowly through steep volcanic terrain.
The pace is deliberately slow because altitude, cold temperatures and reduced oxygen make the climb increasingly difficult. Your guides will encourage a steady rhythm while monitoring your condition throughout the ascent.
Your first major destination is Stella Point at approximately 5,756 metres, located on the rim of Kilimanjaro’s crater. Reaching Stella Point is already a major achievement.
From Stella Point, you continue gradually around the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest point in Africa.
Standing at the summit is an unforgettable achievement. When conditions allow, you may see glaciers, volcanic landscapes, ice formations and clouds stretching far below you.
After taking photographs and celebrating briefly, you begin descending toward Barafu Camp. You usually rest for a short period at Barafu before continuing downward toward Mweka Camp at approximately 3,080 metres.
The lower altitude and warmer temperatures provide welcome relief after the extreme conditions of summit night.
Major activities today include:
Additional memorable experiences include:
DAY 9: MWEKA CAMP TO MWEKA GATE AND RETURN TO ARUSHA
Starting elevation: Approximately 3,080 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 1,640 metres
Approximate hiking distance: 10 kilometres
Approximate hiking time: 3 to 4 hours
Habitat: Montane rainforest
After breakfast, you begin your final hiking day on Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail descends through increasingly dense vegetation as you return to the rainforest zone.
Temperatures become warmer and oxygen levels increase as you lose altitude. The forest may be wet or slippery, especially after recent rainfall, so careful footing remains important.
After approximately 3 to 4 hours, you reach Mweka Gate, where you complete the necessary national park exit procedures.
This is also the point where you say goodbye to the mountain crew that supported you throughout your Kilimanjaro expedition.
After leaving the gate, you travel back to Arusha, where you check into your hotel and enjoy a well deserved rest.
Major activities today include:
Additional activities may include:
DAY 10: DEPARTURE FROM ARUSHA OR CONTINUE YOUR TANZANIA HOLIDAY
