The 6 Days Mount Meru Trekking itinerary with 4 Days Hiking is an exciting high altitude mountain adventure designed for travellers who want to experience one of Tanzania’s most beautiful and rewarding trekking destinations. Rising to approximately 4,566 metres above sea level, Mount Meru is the second highest mountain in Tanzania and one of the most scenic volcanic peaks in East Africa.
Organized by Tansania Toll Safaris, based in Arusha, Tanzania, this itinerary combines wildlife, forest trekking, volcanic landscapes, high altitude hiking and an unforgettable sunrise summit experience. Mount Meru is located inside Arusha National Park, making the climb especially unique because the lower slopes pass through an area that is also home to wildlife.
Unlike Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru has a more rugged volcanic profile with a dramatic crater, steep ridges and spectacular views across northern Tanzania. The mountain was formed through volcanic activity and today features a large crater, ash cone and one of the most dramatic mountain ridges in the region.
The climb begins from Momella Gate, located inside Arusha National Park at approximately 1,500 metres above sea level. From here, trekkers begin walking through open grassland and montane forest toward Miriakamba Hut.
One of the most distinctive aspects of Mount Meru trekking is the possibility of seeing wildlife during the lower stages of the climb. Depending on location and luck, you may encounter giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, monkeys and different bird species.
Because the route passes through wildlife habitat, the first trekking section is normally accompanied by an armed park ranger. This creates a mountain experience that combines hiking with the atmosphere of a wildlife safari.
The first overnight stop is Miriakamba Hut at approximately 2,514 metres above sea level. The climb from Momella Gate introduces you to Mount Meru’s forest environment while gradually gaining elevation.
The following day, the route continues toward Saddle Hut at approximately 3,570 metres. The trail becomes steeper and the vegetation changes as you move higher into the mountain’s heath and moorland zones.
From Saddle Hut, climbers normally have the opportunity to make an acclimatization hike toward Little Meru at approximately 3,820 metres. This short climb provides excellent views and also helps prepare your body for the higher elevation of the summit attempt.
The summit climb begins very early, usually during the night. From Saddle Hut, you ascend toward Rhino Point and continue along Mount Meru’s dramatic crater ridge.
This is one of the most spectacular sections of the trek. The route follows narrow and rocky terrain with impressive views into the crater and across the surrounding landscapes.
Your ultimate destination is Socialist Peak at approximately 4,566 metres, the highest point on Mount Meru.
Reaching the summit around sunrise can provide exceptional views across northern Tanzania. On clear mornings, Mount Kilimanjaro may be visible in the distance, creating one of the most iconic mountain views in East Africa.
The summit area also provides dramatic views of Mount Meru’s crater, ash cone and surrounding plains.
After celebrating at the summit, you descend carefully back toward Saddle Hut and continue toward Miriakamba Hut, where you spend another night.
The final hiking day takes you from Miriakamba through forest and open landscapes toward Momella Gate. From there, you return to Arusha.
This 4 Days Mount Meru trekking itinerary is suitable for travellers looking for a shorter mountain expedition in Tanzania or for climbers who want to use Mount Meru as preparation before attempting Mount Kilimanjaro.
Mount Meru is often considered an excellent acclimatization trek because it allows climbers to experience altitude before moving to Kilimanjaro. However, it should also be appreciated as an outstanding mountain adventure in its own right.
With Tansania Toll Safaris, your Mount Meru trekking experience is supported by professional mountain guides, park rangers, porters and mountain staff. Our goal is to provide a safe, scenic and memorable trekking experience from Arusha National Park to the summit of Tanzania’s second highest mountain.
6 Days Mount Meru Trekking Quick Facts
DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN ARUSHA AND MOUNT MERU TREKKING BRIEFING
Welcome to Tanzania and the beginning of your 6 Days Mount Meru Trekking adventure. Depending on your travel schedule, you will normally arrive through Kilimanjaro International Airport, where a representative from Tansania Toll Safaris will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in Arusha.
The road journey from Kilimanjaro International Airport to central Arusha normally covers approximately 45 to 55 kilometres and takes around one to one and a half hours, depending on traffic and the location of your hotel.
Arusha lies at approximately 1,400 metres above sea level and is located close to Mount Meru. The mountain dominates the skyline of the city and is one of the defining natural features of the Arusha region.
After reaching your hotel, you will meet your professional mountain guide for a detailed trekking briefing. Your guide will explain the Mount Meru route, hiking distances, expected trail conditions, altitude changes, mountain accommodation, summit strategy and safety procedures.
Your trekking equipment will also be checked to ensure you have suitable hiking boots, warm clothing, waterproof layers, headlamp, gloves, trekking poles and other essential equipment.
